We are all aware of global warming and climate change. Each year the impact we, as a species, are having on the world around us becomes clearer and more frightening. Research suggests that the Earth’s temperature has increased by 1℃ since the pre-industrial period. This may not sound like much, but it is enough to cause rising sea levels, more extreme weather events and uncertain futures for many species, among other problems. The recent BBC series Seven Worlds One Planet presented by David Attenborough is a stark reminder of the urgency with which we must act, with Rolf Steinmann’s emotional speech at the end of the first episode being particularly hard to watch. With the information available to us, there is no excuse not to take action to try and improve our planet’s chances.
Why do we want to be eco-friendly?
Josh and I have both been lucky enough to grow up in Cornwall, surrounded by beautiful countryside and coast. The possibility of losing this one day doesn’t bear thinking about. Part of Grizzlyware’s ethos is to create a better world to live in – this applies not only to improving day to day life with automation, but also to ensuring that we have a planet left on which to enjoy the time that we save.
How are we making our online business eco-friendly?
Many businesses are trying to become eco-friendly, taking steps such as encouraging carpool schemes, using sustainable materials and creating energy usage targets. However, most of these ideas only apply to businesses have products to sell or big offices to power. So how can an online business like us become more eco-friendly? Here are some of the things we do to try and reduce our impact on the planet.
Recycling and recycled products
We recycle whenever possible – something that we believe we should all be doing at work and home. We also use recycled materials for packaging when we do have to send something. Although we try to keep this to recycled paper and card, if we really need to use plastic we ensure this is recycled too.
We have recently switched to a renewable energy supplier – Bulb. No matter the size of a business’s premises, most use some form of electricity so switching to a green supplier is a quick way to reduce the amount of fossil fuels being burnt. We also turn off lights, equipment and heating when they aren’t being used.
Using technology to our advantage
We store all our documents and contracts electronically. This has helped us to massively reduce our paper waste.
We also try to use video calls rather than face to face meetings. Although sometimes business travel is necessary, we have most of our meetings over video calls.
What are our plans for the future?
Although we feel we have made a good start on reducing our carbon footprint, we still have a long way to go. In the future, we aim to join a green accreditation scheme. This is a great way to set and stick to environmental targets and get new ideas on how to be eco-friendly. We would also like to own an electric car in the future. This would mean that when we have to travel for work, we can still reduce our carbon emissions. We also aim to volunteer some of our time to local environmental initiatives such as beach clean-ups.
